Yeah the fact they're deliberately targeting individual investors instead of institutional investors kind of underscores that this is a cashout.

Not all dead. World record for a cat is like 35 or something crazy.

Our cat who died last year was born at the tail end of the 1990s.

@Plum which would also explain why Garfield Minus Garfield still makes sense.

Garfield is like the bit in 6th Sense where we can see both the kid and Bruce Willis. Jon in Garfield can see dead cats, walking around like regular cats.

@NegativeLookBehind pretty sure this outage was unscheduled, as Ernest usually warns us

At this point, I think I’m just going to create an alternate Lemmy account to avoid these blackouts.

You should. I have accounts all over the fediverse, probably one of the reasons I don't get angsty if my main on kbin's down.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@NegativeLookBehind kbinDevlog. Personally I feel pretty chill about it.

I don't think Ernest owes us anything. It's his early development project, he didn't specifically invite me here. I just showed up one day, and feel grateful to be able to come along for the ride.

Cool!

@freamon can mastodon users not normally see when we tag them on lemmy? They can on kbin.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@freamon I get it. That's something I like about kbin, the "microblogs" sections are all mastodon content.

But Swiss anti-racism groups point out that targeting an entire racial, religious or ethnic group because of the alleged bad behaviour of a few is more serious than clumsy wording; in fact it's a classic sign of racism and discrimination.

A better way to prevent theft and damage, they say, would be to do what many ski hire shops already do: take an ID and a credit card from customers.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It does sound like staff in there are racist. If people are stealing from your shop, the normal solution is to implement anti-theft measures. Not blame their ethnicity and start discriminating against an entire ethnic group.

I agree requiring a refundable bond would be the way to go - and making them sign a basic hire contract.

Yes it's quite weird. I'm glad they have been pinged out for it.

Senegal cuts internet again amid widening crackdown on dissent (www.reuters.com)

livus OP ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@HubertManne Cutting off the internet achieves two goals, one is to reduce protestors' coordination abilities.

But the more sinister one is to enable authorities to take harsher actions without immediate scrutiny. If a bunch of people die in this blackout it won't be the first time that happens in the region.

It's not usual for Senegal though. Change might be in the air.

From the article:

Military operations in Rafah could lead to a slaughter in Gaza. They could also leave an already fragile humanitarian operation at death's door," said U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths. "We lack the safety guarantees, the aid supplies and the staff capacity to keep this operation afloat.
"The international community has been warning against the dangerous consequences of any ground invasion in Rafah. The Government of Israel cannot continue to ignore these calls," he said in a statement.

Talks involving the U.S., Egypt, Israel and Qatar on a Gaza truce ended without a breakthrough on Tuesday as calls grew for Israel to hold back on its planned Rafah assault.
"My sincere hope is that negotiations for the release of hostages and some form of cessation of hostilities to be successful to avoid an all-out offensive over Rafah," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Tuesday.

"That would have devastating consequences," he said.
The war in Hamas-run Gaza began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and capturing 253 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. In retaliation, Israel launched a military assault on Gaza that health authorities say has killed more than 28,000 Palestinians with thousands more bodies feared lost amid the ruins.

More than half Gaza's 2.3 million people are sheltering in Rafah, many of them penned up against the border fence with Egypt and living in makeshift tents. Griffiths said they are "staring death in the face."

"They have little to eat, hardly any access to medical care, nowhere to sleep, nowhere safe to go," he said. "I have said for weeks now that our humanitarian response is in tatters."

@athos77 yeah I agree. It's not rocket science. It's obvious to everyone what is going to happen.

A crowd destroyed a driverless Waymo car in San Francisco (www.theverge.com)

A person jumped on the hood of a Waymo driverless taxi and smashed its windshield in San Francisco’s Chinatown last night around 9PM PT, generating applause before a crowd formed around the car and covered it in spray paint, breaking its windows, and ultimately set it on fire. Evacuate where/how?

This reminds me of that thing playground bullies do where they grab a kid's hand and smash it into the kid's own face while asking "why don't you stop hitting yourself".

Only with this one all the kids are maimed and killed.

    The region is still reeling from a devastating two-year civil war which saw the Ethiopian federal government and allied forces engaged in a deadly conflict with Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, forces in Northern Ethiopia's Tigray region.

    Speaking to ABC News in January 2023, Professor Jan Nyssen, Senior Professor at the Department of Geography at Ghent University, said at least 383,000 to 6,000 civilian deaths have occurred in Tigray between November 2020 and August 2022. The conflict left over 20 million people in Ethiopia in need of aid, over 2.8 million displaced.

    @Tness16 please can you provide a translation as per

    7: Articles in languages other than English must be accompanied by a full English translation, due to moderator limitations.

    livus , (edited )
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    @Tness16 I do not have time to google translate every submission myself manually.

    As a mod, it would be irresponsible to allow material I/we do not understand to be posted here. Under such conditions, for example, genocidaires have spread incitement to genocide on other social media networks.

    I am trying to be inclusive with the translation rule but if it does not work out, realistically our other option is to make it English-only.
